Atos encourages more females to secure IT career

Atos, an international leader in digital services, is encouraging talented female undergraduates to consider a career in IT in order to address the gender gap within the profession.

 

The ‘IT Meets High Tea’ event, part of The Prince’s Trust Million Makers Challenge, took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Birmingham and gave female undergraduates from several UK universities including Nottingham, Birmingham, Aston, Brunel, Warwick, Loughborough and Durham studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and interested in a career within the technology industry the chance to meet and engage with prospective IT employers including representatives from Atos.

 

The event kicked off with a career fair, where students could visit stalls from each of the participating employers and find out more about the company and their graduate schemes. Each company then ran workshops which provided students with tips and advice on what they need to do to pursue a successful career in IT as well at advice on how to secure a job with workshops on personal brand and presentation skills.

 

Ursula Morgenstern, CEO of Atos UK & Ireland, was the keynote speaker and gave a speech on why driving more women to consider a career in IT is important for the industry.

 

Ursula said: “We have a national shortage of women taking up roles in the technology industry subjects. We need to tackle this because women in a digital business world makes absolute business sense.

 

“Digital is now about communicating to people and customers and in order to do that effectively you have to be able to understand a diverse customer group. This is why diversity is a huge enabler of business and drives innovation, value and productivity. I would urge young women to look closely and consider carefully a career in technology.

 

”I’m really proud to be supporting The Prince’s Trust in helping young people realise their potential in STEM and encouraging more young women to take a closer look at the industry.”

 

Atos employs over 100 graduates per year and around a third of these are women. The company has tasked a group of female graduates to come up with ideas as to how more young women could be attracted to apply to Atos and their recommendations will be rolled into the graduate recruitment drive this year.

 

The ‘IT Meets High Tea’ event was created by The Atos Million Makers Team 2014 who ran the event as part of The Prince’s Trust corporate fundraising competition that challenges companies to come up with creative ideas to help make a difference to the lives of young people in the UK.

 

Sukie Gakhal who attended the event on behalf of The Prince’s Trust alongside Young Ambassador Zoe said: “The team from Atos embodied the spirit of the Million Makers competition in their innovative event, ‘IT Meets High Tea’. Prince’s Trust Young Ambassador Zoe spoke to the attendees about her own journey with The Trust and how she built confidence to gain employment in the Technology sector after attending the Team programme. A fantastic day which nurtured the ambitions of talented young women as well as raised valuable funds for The Prince’s Trust.”

 

Employers including Zayo, KPMG, Cap Gemini and GSK attended and held careers stalls and workshops that allowed students to find out more about the career opportunities available in IT whilst giving employers the chance to convince students of the benefits of starting their career in digital services.
