Atos apprentice enjoys ‘experience of a lifetime’ with key role at Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

Atos apprentice, James Bell from Forres, has had the ‘experience of a lifetime’ over the past month, as one of the team of business technologists delivering what has been described as the ‘most connected’ Commonwealth Games ever in Glasgow.


James
(18) was part of a dedicated team of 60 working behind the scenes on the Games in Glasgow, which was supported by the Atos Major Events headquarters in Barcelona and Madrid, as the company helped deliver an unprecedented level of technical support to Glasgow 2014.


International IT services company, Atos, powered new levels of performance for the Games, having worked closely with the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee for more than two and a half years to deliver a range of essential Games Management Systems and Games Information Systems, which included the volunteer portal, the games workforce management system, the accreditation management system and the games information systems.


Former Forres Academy pupil James, began his career with Atos in September last year and is based at the company’s new Development and Innovation Centre at the Forres Enterprise Park.


“Atos has a tremendous background in helping deliver major events around the world and it was fantastic to be involved in a project which really helped make a difference for Glasgow 2014,” said James.


“I was working with the team delivering the Games Information System from the Technology Operations Centre and helped get the results from the events at each of the Games venues out to the media and public – often in under a second from the time the event was completed and results were verified.


“Seeing at first hand the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes really gives you an insight into the approach required to deliver a successful Games and that is something you cannot really get from watching the event on TV.


“It has also been great working in Glasgow during the Games as the city has been absolutely buzzing and everyone seems to have been going around with a smile on their faces. We even bumped in to Billy Connolly in the street in the city!”


With a global viewing audience of more than 1.5 billion, more than 1 million tickets sold, 4,500 athletes participating and more than 2,500 journalists covering Glasgow 2014, the role played by Atos in delivering Games information and results was essential for all involved.

Earlier this year, Atos announced it was seeking 50 exceptional young people to join the organisation as apprentices in Scotland - specialising in areas such as cloud computing and cyber security. The opportunities are part of the company’s annual Apprenticeship Scheme.


After initially offering seven places in its first year, the programme has now trained more than 150 apprentices, most of whom have gone to secure permanent roles with the company. This year, Atos hopes to attract 115 of Britain’s brightest and best to work for them with up to 50 places available in Scotland. The company is currently looking to recruit 13 apprentices at its Livingston headquarters, 7 in Glasgow and 27 at its new Development and Innovation Centre in Forres.


Atos’ Apprenticeship Programme has been widely recognised for its quality. The company was declared one of the City & Guilds Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers in 2013, was Regional Winner of the Employer of the Year in 2013’s National Apprenticeship Awards as well as being nationally shortlisted. The company was also the winner of Scotland’s Best Newcomer Employer for apprentices in 2012.
