Atos help Moray pupils race to the challenge

Moray, 23 June 2014

Milne's High School Sport's Day with AtosA team from international IT services company, Atos, challenged S3 pupils from a Moray school to create a results system for their school’s Sports Day.

The Atos team challenged 112 pupils from Milne’s High School in Fochabers to design an online system to identify and display record breaking performances. The pupils were split into teams of seven and each were designated roles such as project manager, designer, developer and tester.

The system developed by the pupils had to record results, add the results to the running house total, display running totals and broadcast results for the internal audiences. The most effective system would then be used to record the results at their annual school sports day.

Atos approached the local authority about setting a challenge to schools to raise awareness of ‘real-world’ applications for technology.  With the IT company being an Official Supporter of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, providing essential Games Management Systems and Games Information Systems it was an excellent opportunity to reflect the technology provided to the world’s leading sporting athletes at major events.

Mike Burchell – Depute Rector, Milne’s High School: “Atos have provided our S3 pupils with an amazing challenge that has seen them develop a wide range of skills. Pupils certainly had an excellent experience that provided them with a remarkable sense of personal and team achievement and the development of Skills for Learning, Life and Work and Higher Order Thinking Skills.

“The support from Atos staff has been superb. They have given pupils a taste of the real world of work and the skills of leadership and management required to be successful.”

Gavin Thomson, Atos Senior Vice President in Scotland, said: “As a significant employer in Moray particularly of apprentices and graduates, this challenge has hopefully given the pupils a flavour of IT as a future career.

William Binnie, Business Technologist at Atos’ Innovation and Development Centre in Forres said: “Our team was happy to impart our skills and expertise to help build technology skills and capabilities with the pupils of Milne’s High School. We were all very impressed with the enthusiasm of the pupils and the solutions they came up with.”

This activity marks Atos’ commitment to encourage young people to get more involved in this year’s Games in addition to informing them of the important role IT plays in major sporting events like the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Atos will bring its extensive experience to the Games which will see 6,500 athletes from 71 nations and territories compete in 17 sports over 11 days, from 23 July – 3 August 2014.
