Chiltern Railways selects Atos Origin for online and mobile ticketing

AVANTIX™ WebTIS makes it easier, faster and more convenient for passengers to buy train tickets
London, 24 May 2010

Atos Origin, an international IT services company and a leader in hi-tech transactional services, today announced that it has signed a new deal with Chiltern Railways to deliver online and mobile ticketing services.

Through the new arrangement, Atos Origin will deliver a comprehensive ticketing, fulfilment and customer care solution to Chiltern Railways allowing passengers to:

  • Purchase tickets directly from the redesigned booking engine on the Chiltern Railways website (
  • Purchase tickets using a Chiltern Railways branded mobile phone application from August 2010.
  • Receive their ticket through a variety of means - at a station ticket machine, via post or as a secure bar-code which can be printed at home or delivered to a mobile phone.

These new ticketing services, delivered by Atos Origin, will make it faster, easier and more convenient for passengers to buy rail tickets. Using the AVANTIX WebTIS solution passengers can search online for the best fares available by departure time, fare group or through a new ‘lowest fares finder’ tool which highlights in real-time the cheapest rail fare combination available for any journey.

Chiltern Railways will benefit through better sales and customer information, the ability to rapidly deploy marketing campaigns and have the flexibility to monitor and manage the success rate of sales promotions. Atos Origin has also implemented an innovative fraud management system to help reduce online fraud.

Chiltern Railways is currently engaged in a major upgrade of its route from Birmingham Moor Street to London Marylebone to create a new mainline between the West Midlands and London. This £250m project is the largest privately funded passenger rail infrastructure investment since before world war two.

“Making it easier and more enjoyable for our passengers to travel will be essential to the success of Chiltern Mainline,” said Thomas Ableman, Marketing Director at Chiltern Railways. “We are pleased to be working with Atos Origin, which has the technology and rail expertise to support us as we prepare for the launch next year.”

“We are delighted to be working with Chiltern Railways, a pioneering rail operator that is leading the way in using new technology to improve service for passengers while reducing their own costs,” said Tony Lacy, General Manager for Transport at Atos Origin. “We believe that our deep knowledge mixed with our popular AVANTIX WebTIS solution will make this a hugely successful relationship with a mutually beneficial result for both Chiltern Railways and its passengers.”

Forming part of our broader ticketing portfolio that includes solutions for on-train, e- and m-ticketing, we designed WebTIS to meet our customers’ needs for intuitive and easy to use technology. For train operating companies, it provides valuable management information that facilitates the running of their businesses.”
