FirstGroup signs Customer Information System deal with Atos Origin

Improving information consistency making it easier for passenger to plan and manage their journeys
London, 4th February 2010
Atos Origin, an international IT services company, today announced that it has signed a new application development, installation and support contract with FirstGroup, Britain’s largest transport operator. The project, broken down into two phases, will enable the First Great Western train operating franchise to join up its three separate Customer Information System (CIS) control systems – a legacy of the franchise formation. The new system will drive CIS displays, automated public address and information points at almost 200 stations from one single, centralised control point.

For the first 18 months, Atos Origin will develop and install the new system, based on its sophisticated CIS control system application – LICC. The company’s responsibilities will include system design and central installation, migration strategy, hardware provision, PA announcement recording, formal acceptance testing, operator training, and station migration. Atos Origin will then provide 24-hour service desk and application support services for the LICC software for the subsequent five years.

The installation will be co-ordinated with First Great Western’s current CIS display and PA hardware upgrades as well as being ready for any future enhancements and expansion across what is one of the largest and most complex rail networks in the UK.

Tony Lacy, General Manager for Transport at Atos Origin, comments: “We are delighted to be working closely with FirstGroup to provide a solution that provides better and more timely customer information. Consolidating separate systems into a single, easy to use control system will benefit First Great Western as well as its one and a half million passengers every week. We look forward to further strengthening our relationship and ensuring a seamless transition to the new system.”

Peter Taylor, Project Manager for First Great Western, explains the benefits of the new system: “The First Great Western franchise was born out of three former franchises, each with its own customer information system. As we continue to improve the information we give customers, a single, centrally controlled, system is essential.

We will be working alongside Atos Origin to roll out the new system, which we are confident will save our staff monitoring and control time; save the franchise money through rationalisation and enable more effective disruption management. Most importantly, providing all of our passengers with consistent and accurate information before and throughout their journey is essential – this solution allows us to do just that.”

LICC is already in use by Train Operators and Network Rail, providing CIS information for over 1,200 stations throughout the UK. Atos Origin will further develop its established LICC software to incorporate additional functionality to meet First Great Western’s specific and complex requirements.

For over ten years, FirstGroup and Atos Origin have collaborated closely on applications to improve passenger services, enabling them to buy tickets on the move, make seamless connections, travel faster, and receive accurate and reliable journey information. For over 12 years, Atos Origin has also installed and supported CIS at 220 ScotRail stations.
