Andover

Where is Andover?

The Andover office is well located to get to and from locations around the South and South West of England; it takes an hour and ten minutes on the train to London Waterloo.

Are there any other interns or grads working from this office?

There are a handful of graduates and interns at Andover Kingsgate House who regularly meet up with grads based at other offices – especially London as it’s so easy to get to. It’s a close-knit team, and small enough that everyone knows each other quite well in the office.

Is it easy to travel and park?

There’s an employee car park with plenty of spaces. If you take the train, it’s an easy 20-minute walk to the office from the station.

If I move to the area, where are the best places to live?

You can live in Andover – lots of the grads lived here when they first joined, then some moved out to Basingstoke where there’s a bit more going on and which is only a 20-minute commute from the office. There are lots of pretty little country towns and villages surrounding Andover, and it’s close enough to commute from Southampton if you fancy living on the coast.

What are the options for lunch?

People tend to bring their own lunch in, but there’s a pub a short distance away as well as local supermarkets, or you can pop into town for fish and chips.

Birmingham

Where is Birmingham?

Birmingham is the most populous British city outside the capital and lies within the West Midlands region. It has excellent motorway and rail access to all parts of the UK.

Are there any other interns or grads working from this office?

There is a small community of graduates and interns in Birmingham, who all catch up for lunch most days. It’s a close-knit culture, and a great opportunity to socialize with colleagues outside your regular team. And since there are graduates and interns from a range of intakes, you’ll be able to ask plenty of questions to gain insight into other areas of the business!

Is it easy to travel and park?

Most people travel by car, as there is a really decent-sized car park onsite, and also an overflow car park that is a two-minute walk from the office. The office is easily accessible from the M42 and M6 – follow signs initially to the NEC and you will then see signs to Birmingham Business Park, which is where we are based.

If you’d prefer to get public transport then don’t worry! There are plenty of good transport links, with the nearest train station being Birmingham International, which has good connections locally and across the UK. For those wanting to live in central Birmingham, this station is a 5-6 minute journey from Birmingham New Street.

If I move to the area, where are the best places to live?

There are plenty of places to live in the surrounding area, whether you’re looking for something cheap and cheerful or more upmarket. The more cost-effective areas in which to rent are Marston Green and Chelmsley Wood, which are approximately 10 minutes’ drive from the office. If you’re looking for an upmarket area, then Solihull is lovely, although it is a bit more pricy. Solihull is approximately 20 minutes’ drive from the office.

What are the options for lunch?

Within the Birmingham office there are two breakout areas, which offer tea, coffee and squash. There are also free coffee machines with cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and freshly brewed leaf tea. The breakout areas are where the grads generally meet for a catch-up. Both breakout areas also have vending machines if you need a chocolate fix. Other options for lunch include O’Brien’s café opposite the, which offers standard tasty hot food from jacket potatoes to paninis. In addition, there is a WH Smith if you’re looking for a meal-deal or a snack and the sandwich wagon arrives every day at 10.30. If you fancy a drive, there are plenty of places nearby – KFC and McDonalds are a 10-minute drive from the office, ASDA Supermarket is 15 minutes away and The Little Owl, Vintage Inn Pub is not far and serves a good selection of food. On a Friday the grads will often drive to The Little Owl or White Horse for a pub lunch.

Crewe

Where is it?

Crewe is a fairly small town surrounded by even smaller villages in the eastern area of Cheshire in the North West of England, it offers easy access to Liverpool and Manchester as well as Stoke on Trent via the nearby M6 motorway.

Are there any other interns or grads working from this office?

There is a small but lively community of interns and graduates at Crewe Rail House. What we lack in numbers, we certainly make up for in personality!

Is it easy to travel and park?

Parking for the building is limited, so a car park lottery scheme is in place. To enter the lottery you need to drive to the office at least four times a week, and winners get free use of the car park for two months. This system is soon to be replaced by a waiting list system where drivers add their name to the list and wait for their turn to come up. Aside from parking onsite, you can park at the nearby Crewe Alexandra FC grounds for around £40 a month, or you can try to find a space on some of the residential roads close to the office. These tend to fill up fast, though, so get there early! As its name suggests, the office is directly adjacent to Crewe train station, which is the largest interchange in the north with regular direct services to almost everywhere, including Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, London, Scotland and the South West. The building also has a decent bus service, with regular buses to east, west and south Crewe.

If I move to the area, where are the best places to live?

If you’re looking for big city living then Manchester and Birmingham are within an hour by train. If you’d rather live close by, the neighbouring town of Nantwich is a great choice: it has a great nightlife and a train station providing a 10-minute commute to the office. Nantwich is much more expensive than Crewe, so if you’re looking for cheaper accommodation then you’d be better finding a property in central Crewe. Make sure you have a chat with people who know the area and can best advise you on the nicest places to live.

What are the options for lunch?

Rail House has something for everyone when it comes to getting food. If you fancy a quick meal, there are a few chip shops and kebab houses nearby, as well as a McDonald’s and Domino’s. There is also a KFC a short drive away, as well as Whitney’s (formerly Chatwins), which has an excellent reputation for breakfast butties, sandwiches and cakes and pastries. If you’d prefer to grab a microwave meal, snacks or a paper, there is a Tesco Express at the nearby petrol station, with a full size Tesco Extra about 15 minutes away.

For those who want to eat out, Giovanni’s is a nice Italian restaurant just a stone’s throw from the building, or if you prefer more traditional pub grub there’s the Brocklebank Brewers Fayre, which is about a 15-minute walk.

Darlington

Where is it?

Darlington is a market town in southern County Durham with the closest major cities including Newcastle, Durham and Middlesbrough and slightly further afield Manchester and Leeds. Great transport links make all these cities within easy reach for trips away and nights out.

Are there any other interns or grads working from this office?

We have quite a few graduates based in Darlington, and many teams have actively recruited new grads, so this number is steadily increasing. We try to meet up for lunch regularly and there’s also a social committee running events, so there’ll be plenty of opportunity to get to know people. In total, there are around 130 people in the office.

If I move to the area, where are the best places to live?

Darlington has plenty of accommodation, and it’s fairly cheap. The best initial option is probably to rent a flat in Tillage Green, which is a small new-build development within walking distance of the office. If this is out of your price range, you should have a look at spareroom.co.uk and easyroommate.com, which offer plenty of options. Equally you may want to live in Middlesbrough, Newcastle or Durham – both of which are in commutable distance.

Is it easy to travel and park?

Situated on the East Coast mainline, right beside the A1, Darlington is a very well located town and many of our staff commute each day – it’s an easy drive with relatively little traffic. The office is on an industrial park, so there is a large car park with plenty of capacity, and it’s pretty accessible even if you don’t drive. The nearest station is Darlington, which is a short bus ride away – and the bus passes right in front of the office.

What are the options for lunch?

There is a kitchen if you wish to bring your own lunch. Alternatively, there is a nice (and cheap) sandwich shop about 100 metres up the road, or you can drive into town to find plenty of cafés, plus Subway and Greggs.

There are a few grads and interns working at this site, as well apprentices. They are quite a small team, but meet up with grads from our Edinburgh office for drinks and work events.

Is it easy to travel and park?

The nearest train station is Priesthill & Darnley or Nitshill Station. The offices are located beside the M77 and therefore are accessible by car from all areas of Glasgow. It is easy to park with lots of space in the car parks and if you don’t drive, there are buses from town which run from Buchanan Bus Station too.

If I move to the area, where are the best places to live?

Living in the south side, west end or centre of Glasgow is advisable, as from there the building is accessible through various forms of transport. There is a good mix of new and old style buildings.

What are the options for lunch?

Are there any other interns or grads working from this office?

There are a few grads in the office, and they tend to mix with each other, as well as their own teams, and of course catch up with all the other grads through the various events we organise as a grad and intern community

Is it easy to travel and park?

Parking is quite limited in the car park so people tend to cycle or walk in, and taking the train is also possible as it takes around 20 minutes to walk. What are the options for lunch?

Anything you like as it’s so centrally located.

The surrounding area is remote and scenic, with occasional wildlife – it’s especially enjoyable in the summer.
