For the full story about the Atos apprentice journey, you need to hear from people who’ve actually been on it.
Atos start date: 2013
Job title: Advanced Level - IT Hardware & Networking
My job summed up:
My role includes talking to clients to configure applications to meet their high standards.
Once I have been able to configure the application clearly, I put my newly learned skills into action by using software designed for our role. This helps me to deliver products I know will meet to our customers’ individual needs. Being part of such a large company and still having that sense of achieving something for Atos is one key reason why I chose an apprenticeship over my alternative route of university. My apprenticeship has given me a career path in an organisation where I can still progress into a higher position while gaining qualifications.
What impact do you feel you’ve had since joining?
Only four months into the apprenticeship, I was trusted to embark on a major project, helping to test converted applications at a time when my team were particularly busy. Being trusted to complete client work, not only helps my team, but gives me a sense of achievement, pushing me to become more advanced every day. I may not have the full skillset at the moment but the key is to remember an apprentice is an investment. I know that both my managers and I believe I have the capabilities to become a key contributor within the team!
What do you feel you’ve learned since your apprenticeship?
Going into this apprenticeship I had basic IT skills, seven months later I have advanced my IT skills and continue to gain knowledge in one of the most complex IT careers – where usually someone would have at least 4 years of IT experience prior to joining the team. I’ve managed to complete several Microsoft Technology Associate exams as part of my apprenticeship, and enjoy the opportunity to gain new qualifications.
My job role involves talking to clients and ensuring what they want from an application is made possible. Recently, I successfully took it upon myself to liaise with a client without prior experience, which has given me new confidence when presenting internally and externally. It just goes to show: if you’re willing to work hard for what you want, you can achieve it!
